  1. Question for you - have your crabs ever turned almost bluish black, even the legs, before a molt? I'm concerned about one of my moon crabs (I have 3) - I actually thought he must be dead because he'd turned so black- but he isn't dead. In the past when they've molted they definitely looked ugly, but their legs never turned black before, so I'm concerned there's something wrong :/ Also, how do you avoid getting mites in the cage, when using fresh food? My crabs always grab food and run and bury it, and then I end up with problems - but I don't like to overly disturb them, so I don't want to be digging the cage up every day to find uneaten food...

    1. Hmm see mine dont change much before.molting but i have heard of blackened edges premolt. My advice? Let him be. I made a grave mistake in bothering my one crab when worried and i ended up killing her.
As for the mites...what do you use for substrate? I use stright super moist play sand. Always.at sand castle building moistness. I do an overhaul once a month or less depending on how many times they change burrows. See in the wild these crabs are responsible for fungi and fertilization of plnt life from their rotting food hauls. Soil allows for rot. Sand does not. In the year and a half iv ehad them iv enever had mold in my sand. If youd like to directly.email about thisissue more - muddslingercc@aol.com

  2. I am New to moon crabs... actually mine will be here in a few days. Anyway, I am doing half land half water but I seen that you just use water bowls and have lots of land room. I guess what I'm asking for is your opinion... bowl or 50/50? Thanks!!

    1. It depends. Keep in mind your.crabs need fresh clean water so you will either need something you can remove amd clean frequently or that has a good filter.running. what are you using for substrate? Ar eyou going to have a divider?
It comes down to that yes a most naturalistic is best, id say 50/50 is too much water. They are diggers/ andThey dont swim, they only enter to water gills and filter sand. You only need water deep enough for them.to fully submerge.
I personally prefer dishes, i can clean them everyday if nee dbe. My crabs tend to pull as much san das possible into their dishes.

    2. I am using about 4" of coconut fiber on the bottom, and about 4" of sand on top.gravel on the water side. I'll probably end up getting bowls, because as you mentioned clean water is gonna be a pain to have daily. A filter system seems like to much hassle and like you said they don't swim so bowls seem to be the better way to go! I have a divider in now but its pretty ghetto. Haha!

    3. See haha if you look in my past posts i had running water sections but it ended horribly.both times. Ive seen t done but its.definitely.a hassle.with.such destructive creatures. 8 inches is a great depth they love burrowing. Dont be surprised if the.coco and sand gets.mixed by the ebd of the first day haha.
Any ide aof how big the ones.youre getting are? Id love to see your setup when you get them in

I hope they aren't to big when I get them but I guess I'll find out! I'll take pictures and send them to you somehow! I'm new to this blog thing, I've been trying to find some good info on these things all week! You are a savior!!! Like you said the other info on the web is not the best, so glad to have found someone with some real experience with these carbs!

    5. Hopefully theyre a similar size! And small. Its fun to watch them grow. You can email them to me- muddslingercc@aol.com
Yea, i looked at it this way, they are wild caught so you gott afigurre out what their habitats like . Do research on them as an animal not a pet. I t was terribly disaapointing finding blogs and forums about them only lastong 6 months. Mine have been perfect since feb 2011! Working so far

  3. That is awesome! I hope mine do that good! :) I think I am going to get a red bulb because my room is in the basement and it is always cool down there so I'm gonna need a light I can use all day and night to keep everything good, and I had no idea that I could just use regular play sand. I bought this fancy expensive crab sand. Ahh I'm so excited to finally get them!!! Tuesday is so far away!

    2. OK awesome! Thanks for all the help!!! I got rid of the half water half land in my tank. I just got a small plastic dish for now with rocks in it. Until I get to the pet store. How deep should the water be, its hard to tell how tall they are until you see them for real.

    3. I use deli cups, the lliterally hold.one cup of water, its maybe 2 inches deep. By now im gonna have to start getting something slightly deeper. But its a good starting point bc if you have to you can add pebbles. See i got mine at a reptile expo so i knew as soon as i got them and just kinda rummaged through our saved deli dishes. They also sell plastic cat dishes that could work too.

  4. Did you get the brand name of that bulb? And do you leave yours on 24/7 and your crabs still come out at night?

    1. So sorry i forgot! Its been a crazy weekend haha. I use the exoterra night heat lamp bulbs. The blue.box. it has a lower light outpt than red bulbs so it doesnt change their cycle. I use it day and night. I.personally have a 50 w in a dome socket, set ontop of their screen lid. I have.a 20 gal. It keeps the.tank between 80-88 in my 73-75 degree room.which is perfect.
